Welsh injury boost for Scotland as Swansea calms fears

Scotland defender Stephen Welsh has been handed a fitness boost ahead of the national team's final Nations League fixtures, with Swansea City confirming he has avoided a serious injury.

The central defender limped out of Swansea's clash with Portsmouth on Tuesday evening after injuring his knee in a heavy challenge from Ebou Adams. There were initial concerns that he had suffered a major setback.

Scan results confirm minor issue

However, scans have confirmed that the issue is only minor. Swansea City boss Vitor Matos said: "It's good news. The scan is clear so it's really just a bad knock there.

"There's nothing major, but we will still assess him to see if he's available for Saturday. It's not a bad injury, it's just a knock that's really painful."

Availability for club and country

Matos has not ruled Welsh out of Swansea's weekend clash with Birmingham. The news should also mean he will be fit to join up with the Scotland squad next week.

Sebastien Pocognoli's side have Nations League clashes with Switzerland and North Macedonia. Welsh will be keen to feature after making his Scotland breakthrough last month.

He made his debut against Slovenia and then played against North Macedonia and Switzerland.
