Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler has thrown his support behind Danny Welbeck, insisting a place in England's 2026 World Cup squad would be 'the rewards he deserves because of his achievements'. The 35-year-old striker has scored 14 times for Brighton this season, a career high, as the Seagulls push for European qualification.
Welbeck, who previously played for England at Euro 2012 and scored in a comeback win over Sweden, has not featured for the national side since 2018. However, his form for Brighton has put him in contention for Thomas Tuchel's squad, which is set to be announced on Friday. Hurzeler praised Welbeck's professionalism and work ethic, saying: 'It's a sign of his professionalism, of how hard he works, of his daily work ethic.'
Behind Harry Kane, Ollie Watkins is considered the likely back-up, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Dominic Solanke, and Ivan Toney also in the mix. Welbeck's durability and consistency have impressed Hurzeler, who noted: 'In the last two seasons, he scored the most goals ever. He played the most minutes ever in the Premier League.'
Welbeck's resurgence comes after being deemed surplus by both Manchester United and Arsenal earlier in his career. Hurzeler added: 'Even when you get older, you still have a chance that you can improve, that you can achieve things.'
