Wayne Rooney has reportedly agreed a lucrative deal to become a pundit on BBC's Match of the Day from next season. The former England captain will join the flagship highlights programme following the departure of long-time host Gary Lineker.
Lineker left the BBC at the end of last season after 25 years as host, following controversy over a social media post. He has been replaced by a rotating trio of presenters: Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates.
Rooney, 39, is Manchester United's record goalscorer and previously held the England scoring record. He has recently worked as a pundit for the BBC and Sky Sports since being sacked as Plymouth manager in December.
The deal is said to include the possibility of a two-year extension, and Rooney is expected to feature as a pundit during the World Cup alongside Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand and others.
Rooney's managerial career included spells at Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City and Plymouth, but this move may signal a shift away from coaching.
