Viktor Gyökeres Deserves More Respect at Arsenal

Viktor Gyökeres has scored 21 goals in all competitions for Arsenal this season, making him only the 13th player in the club's history to reach 20 goals in his debut campaign. The Swedish striker scored twice in Saturday's 3-0 win over Fulham, taking his tally to 14 goals since the start of 2026—more than any other Premier League player.

Despite early criticism following his £55m summer move, Gyökeres has outperformed Arsenal legends in his first season. Only Alexis Sánchez (25 in 2014-15) and Thierry Henry (26 in 1999-2000) have scored more in their debut Premier League campaigns. Robin van Persie managed just nine goals in his first season.

Critics have pointed to a reliance on penalties, with three of his 14 Premier League goals coming from the spot (21.4%). However, that proportion is lower than Dominic Calvert-Lewin (25%) and Igor Thiago (36.4%), and well below Harry Kane (30%) and Kylian Mbappé (29%). Gyökeres has converted 27 consecutive penalties, demonstrating composure under pressure.

Beyond goals, Gyökeres creates space for teammates with his powerful runs and intelligent movement. His contribution has helped Arsenal build a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League with three games remaining, as they also chase Champions League glory.
