Robin van Persie has praised Aston Villa's remarkable turnaround since his playing days, as the Feyenoord boss prepares to face the Premier League side in the Champions League. The Dutchman last encountered Villa in December 2014, shortly before they were relegated to the Championship.
Van Persie, who scored a hat-trick against Villa in 2013 including a famous volley for Manchester United, expressed admiration for the club's progress under Unai Emery. 'Aston Villa is obviously a fantastic team with a fantastic manager,' he said in his pre-match press conference.
The former Arsenal and United striker highlighted Villa's structure and fitness, calling them 'definitely the favourites' for Thursday's match. He noted the high standard of the Premier League, where every game is a battle, and praised Villa's ability to adapt.
Van Persie singled out striker Ollie Watkins as a major threat, commending his runs, movement, and directness. 'He is fast, technical, and in the box is where his qualities lay,' Van Persie said. 'He will be a big threat against us tomorrow.'
Villa have enjoyed three consecutive European campaigns under Emery, including Champions League qualification, after years of struggle. Van Persie said he is 'curious' to measure his Feyenoord side against such opposition.
