Michael van Gerwen has revealed the profound impact of a traumatic year on his personal life and career, as he prepares for the PDC World Darts Championship. The 36-year-old former world number one has endured a divorce from his wife Daphne after 17 years, his father's battle with cancer, and intense media scrutiny in the Netherlands.
Van Gerwen, who held the world number one spot for a record 2,559 days from 2014 to 2021, admits the challenges have changed his perspective. 'It has made me understand what's most important in life. It has to be family,' he said. 'Of course I love darts, but I love my kids much more.'
The Dutchman, who has three world titles, last won the championship in 2019. He acknowledges that fatherhood has affected his focus. 'When I had kids, darts was not my number one any more. You have to try to balance things a little better.' He added that his children, Zoë (8) and Mike (5), now demand more attention, limiting his practice time.
Van Gerwen also reflected on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said disrupted his form. 'Everyone who was playing well at that time, where are they now? They can't win a raffle any more. Without crowds it was disgusting,' he said, emphasising the importance of audience energy.
Despite his struggles, Van Gerwen remains optimistic about reclaiming glory at the World Championship, which begins on Thursday. 'I feel good now even if, 100%, this has been a very tough year for me both on and off the oche,' he said, vowing to compete for the title.
