Michael van Gerwen has confirmed he will return to Premier League action in Belfast on Thursday, days after withdrawing from last week's event in Glasgow due to illness. The Dutchman, a seven-time Premier League champion, pulled out of night three at the OVO Hydro citing a medical issue.
Speaking to AD.nl, Van Gerwen said: “I’m feeling much better, but I was really poorly. I’ll be there on Thursday. Tomorrow I’m flying to Northern Ireland. I’m not completely fit yet, but fit enough.”
Van Gerwen’s friend Vincent van der Voort revealed on Dutch podcast Darts Draait Door that the illness was more serious than initially thought. “It's really not going well at the moment,” Van der Voort said. “He's seriously ill. He's having trouble eating because the glands in his throat are swollen. All sorts of tests have been done, but nothing has come of it.”
Van Gerwen currently sits second in the Premier League table after three nights, having won five matches including a victory in Newcastle. He takes on Gerwyn Price in the quarter-finals in Belfast on Thursday evening.
