Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has robustly defended the relationship between the team and its fans, stating that the bond remains intact despite recent scrutiny. His comments follow a commanding 4-0 victory over Galatasaray in the Champions League, which secured Liverpool's place in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2022.
Van Dijk Rejects Claims of Broken Connection
Van Dijk expressed displeasure at suggestions that the connection with supporters had deteriorated this season. "That is a bit of a question I don't like – I don't like that tone to be honest," he said. "In all these years at Liverpool I've never ever questioned them and I still don't." He attributed fan frustration to the team's inconsistent performances compared to last year's title-winning campaign, emphasising a forward-looking focus.
Galatasaray Match Highlights Unity
The match against Galatasaray saw nearly 60,000 home fans providing fierce backing, with only 200 away supporters present due to a UEFA ban. Manager Arne Slot was animated on the touchline, responding to perceived time-wasting tactics, while players actively engaged the crowd throughout the win. Van Dijk noted that performance and atmosphere are intertwined, denying any lack of intensity in previous games this season.
"It's a combination of performance and the fans; they play a big part in that," Van Dijk explained. "The fans can probably say if we bring that every week on the pitch then there is no issue and we can say if the fans bring that every three or four days then there is no issue either. It is about doing it together." He acknowledged player responsibility for subpar performances but highlighted the achievement of reaching the Champions League last eight.
Looking Ahead to Consistency
Slot hopes the Galatasaray display sets a standard for the remainder of the season, though he cautioned about the short turnaround before Saturday's early kick-off at Brighton. Van Dijk echoed this call for consistency, urging the team not to take their abilities for granted. "We shouldn't take this team for granted and we are not going to do that," he said. "It is on to the next, build on this, build on the next performances."
Injury updates from Galatasaray confirmed that striker Victor Osimhen sustained a fractured right forearm during the match, while Noa Lang underwent surgery for a serious cut to his right thumb. Both players were taken to hospital for treatment.
