Virgil van Dijk has launched a scathing attack on his Liverpool teammates following Saturday's 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest, describing the champions' form as 'a mess' and questioning whether every player is taking responsibility.
The defeat, witnessed by club chairman Tom Werner, left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. It was their sixth loss in seven league games and eighth in 11 matches across all competitions.
Van Dijk, visibly angry, said: 'We are definitely letting him [manager Arne Slot] down, but we've let ourselves down as well. At the moment it is a mess – that's just a fact.' He highlighted a lack of consistency and poor defending, especially from set pieces, as key issues.
The captain urged his teammates to step up: 'You have to be a man and face the toughness. If you want to give up then you are at the wrong place.' Liverpool face West Ham next Sunday after a midweek Champions League clash with PSV.
