Federico Valverde scored a stunning 22-minute hat-trick in the first half to lead Real Madrid to a 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League round of 16 first leg. The result leaves Pep Guardiola's side facing a near-impossible task in the return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
Valverde opened the scoring after 12 minutes, capitalising on poor defending from Nico O'Reilly. Thibaut Courtois launched a diagonal ball to the Uruguayan, who took it on the full, evaded O'Reilly, and slotted past Gianluigi Donnarumma from a narrow angle. His second came from a Vinícius Júnior run that deflected off Rúben Dias, allowing Valverde to lash home with his left foot.
The hat-trick was completed in spectacular fashion just before half-time. Vinícius again raced down the left, and after Brahim Díaz's chip, Valverde lofted the ball over Marc Guéhi before volleying home. Real Madrid, missing several key players including Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, dominated the first half.
Guardiola's ultra-attacking 4-2-2-2 formation backfired, leaving City exposed at the back. The manager substituted Savinho for Tijjani Reijnders at half-time, but Real continued to threaten. Vinícius won a penalty in the second half after being fouled by Abdukodir Khusanov, but Donnarumma saved the spot-kick.
City must now overturn a three-goal deficit at home on Tuesday to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Guardiola admitted his side were outplayed, saying: 'We made too many mistakes and they punished us. We need a miracle now.'
