UEFA Imposes Provisional Ban on Benfica Player After Racism Incident
Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has been provisionally suspended by UEFA for Wednesday's Champions League return leg against Real Madrid. This decisive action follows allegations of racist abuse directed at Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the first leg of the tie last Tuesday.
Investigation Launched into Discriminatory Behaviour
UEFA announced the one-match suspension on Monday after appointing an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate the incident thoroughly. The governing body stated that further disciplinary measures could be imposed once the investigation concludes, emphasising a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination in football.
A UEFA statement clarified: "Upon request of the EDI with an interim report, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body today decided to provisionally suspend Mr. Gianluca Prestianni for the next UEFA club competition match for which he would otherwise be eligible for the prima facie violation of Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations related to discriminatory behaviour."
The statement added that this provisional measure is "without prejudice to any ruling that the UEFA disciplinary bodies may subsequently make following the conclusion of the ongoing investigation."
Vinicius Junior's Allegation Halts Play in Lisbon
The incident occurred during Real Madrid's narrow 1-0 victory in Lisbon. Vinicius Junior, who had just scored a spectacular individual goal by curling the ball home from a tight angle five minutes into the second half, became visibly distressed after celebrating in front of the home supporters.
The Brazilian international immediately alerted referee Francois Letexier to alleged racist remarks made by an opponent, later identified by Real Madrid as Gianluca Prestianni. This led to a significant stoppage in play, with Vinicius leaving the pitch and refusing to return for approximately ten minutes, underscoring the severity of the situation.
Real Madrid formally named Prestianni as the player involved, prompting UEFA's swift disciplinary response. The provisional suspension means Prestianni will miss the crucial Champions League clash at the Santiago Bernabéu, pending the outcome of the full investigation.
