Interim Tottenham Hotspur manager Igor Tudor has pinpointed sharper minds, fitter bodies, and reduced on-field lethargy as the catalysts behind the club's modest signs of progress in recent matches. Spurs followed a hard-fought draw at Liverpool with a morale-boosting victory against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, a result that, while not preventing their elimination from the competition, has lifted spirits around the squad.
Mental Sharpness as the Crucial Factor
'Mental sharpness,' Tudor emphasised. 'That was the key. We are sleeping less on the pitch. For me, this is crucial. Now, we react earlier to what happens during play.'
The Croatian coach elaborated, stating, 'We are not always left wondering about events and then reacting belatedly. Instead, we are anticipating and reacting before situations fully develop. It is not yet at the level I ideally desire, but it is significantly better.'
Tudor believes this heightened awareness of dangerous scenarios is gradually embedding itself into the team's approach, contributing directly to their improved performances.
Notable Improvements in Physical Conditioning
Alongside the mental gains, Tudor has observed tangible progress in the squad's physical readiness. 'I witnessed good energy levels,' he noted. 'The data supports this. I was informed that our recent matches rank among the top four or five this entire season for high-intensity runs. This indicates we are moving in the right direction physically.'
Tudor's tenure, which began in mid-February following the departure of Thomas Frank, has coincided with a slightly less congested fixture schedule. His upcoming match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday will be his seventh in charge over four weeks. In contrast, Frank oversaw nine games in his final four weeks, a period severely hampered by a spate of injuries.
Returning Players Bolster Squad Depth
The interim boss is also benefiting from the gradual return of key personnel from injury. Lucas Bergvall, absent for two months, and Destiny Udogie, sidelined for five weeks, both made substitute appearances in the midweek encounter with Atletico Madrid.
Further positive updates concern Mohamed Kudus and Rodrigo Bentancur, both out since January but potentially returning soon after the forthcoming international break. Additionally, James Maddison is expected to recover from a serious knee injury before the season concludes, offering another boost.
High-Stakes Encounter with Forest Looms
Tottenham currently occupy 16th position in the Premier League table with eight fixtures remaining. Nottingham Forest sit just one point behind, outside the relegation zone solely on goal difference ahead of West Ham, who face Aston Villa this weekend.
Despite the high-pressure context, Tudor was measured in his assessment of Sunday's pivotal clash. He downplayed the notion of it being a definitive 'six-pointer' or a 'cup final.'
'There are numerous points still to contest,' Tudor stated. 'Naturally, it is an important fixture given our proximity in the standings. Perhaps not a six-point swing, but let's say a four-point game. It is significant, but it will not be decisively conclusive for our season.'
The manager's focus remains on the incremental improvements in mentality and physicality that he believes are laying a foundation for Tottenham's attempts to climb the table and secure their Premier League status.
