Tuchel Warns England Stars: Avoid Red Cards to Prevent World Cup Bans
Tuchel's red card warning to England players

England manager Thomas Tuchel has issued a stark warning to his players ahead of their final World Cup qualifier against Albania: avoid any unnecessary red cards at all costs.

Ronaldo's Red Card Serves as a Stark Warning

The urgent plea comes in the wake of Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo's dismissal during his nation's defeat to the Republic of Ireland. The former Manchester United forward is now banned for Portugal's final group match and faces a potential three-match suspension that could see him miss the opening fixtures of what is expected to be his final World Cup.

Tuchel confirmed he would address the matter directly with his squad before Sunday's dead rubber in Tirana. "It is important, I'm aware of it and we will talk about it," the England boss stated. "No red cards, please."

Balancing Competition and Caution

England travel to the Air Albania Stadium having already secured their place at next summer's tournament with a perfect qualifying record. The Euro 2024 runners-up have won all seven Group K games without conceding a single goal.

Despite the match being inconsequential to their qualification, Tuchel emphasised the importance of smart decision-making. He advised that if a player is in a position where pulling back an opponent through on goal might seem necessary, the smarter choice would be to avoid the offence.

"In doubt, we are in a position of course, if a player is through and could be last man and pulls his shirt so in doubt tomorrow it will be smarter to not do it," Tuchel explained.

Historical Precedent and Current Discipline

The England manager referenced the cautionary tale of Wayne Rooney, who missed the first two group games at Euro 2012 after being sent off in a qualifier against Montenegro.

Tuchel acknowledged the delicate balance between competitive spirit and avoiding unnecessary risks. "I don't want to make the subject too big speaking about it because then you have a cloud above you," he said. "Normally we are not at risk anyway but if someone has a choice to make, don't do it."

England will be without defender Ezri Konsa, who withdrew from the 23-man squad due to calf discomfort. Meanwhile, Tuchel confirmed he had spoken with Djed Spence about the recent incident where he and Tottenham teammate Micky van de Ven ignored manager Thomas Frank after a defeat to Chelsea.

"Yeah, I didn't like it," Tuchel said regarding the incident. "Because the players know they are not only national players when they are the 10 days in camp, they are always national players, and the standard of behaviour is always important."
