Thomas Tuchel has revealed he still plans to rotate the team for England's final World Cup 2026 group match against Panama, but the changes will be 'more moderate' after the 0-0 draw with Ghana left the Three Lions needing a win to secure top spot in Group L.
England's path to the round of 32
England would have already been confirmed as group winners had they beaten Ghana in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday. Instead, the goalless stalemate means they head into their final group game against Panama still needing a victory at East Rutherford, New Jersey to finish above Ghana, who face Croatia in their last match.
Finishing top would ensure England face a team that finished third in their respective group in the round of 32, a more favourable draw than facing a second-placed side.
Rotation plans adjusted
Tuchel had previously indicated he would heavily rotate his starting XI for the Panama match, with wingers Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford both pushing for their first starts of the tournament. However, the Ghana result has forced a rethink.
Asked whether the draw complicates his rotation plans, Tuchel replied: 'Yes, but I was not even sure if I'll do the full rotation. Maybe we would have. But I am not shy to still do some rotation now if we think that some players should be on the pitch but maybe it will be more moderate.'
He admitted the rotation will be less extensive than if England had beaten Ghana. 'Yes,' he said. 'It's not always fair if you just rotate your players in and say: "Okay, let's perform". Let's see.'
Performance against Ghana
Tuchel accepted the performance against Ghana was less thrilling than the opening win over Croatia, but felt the defensive approach of the west African side played a part. 'I know what we wanted and what we had to take care of,' he said. 'I know it's not crazy exciting, but it needs two to tango.'
