Tuchel Addresses Alexander-Arnold's Omission from England Squad

England manager Thomas Tuchel has publicly acknowledged Trent Alexander-Arnold's pointed response to being left out of the latest national team selection, while carefully refusing to rule out the Real Madrid defender's chances of making the final World Cup squad.

Surprise Omission Sparks Social Media Reaction

The exclusion of Alexander-Arnold from England's extended 35-man squad for the current international break represented perhaps the most surprising selection decision, with the former Liverpool star missing out entirely. The 27-year-old defender didn't appear to take the news well, taking to Instagram to post an emphatic message following his exclusion: 'Madrid. Y nada mas', which translates to 'Madrid. And nothing else'.

Tuchel was questioned about the social media post by ITV ahead of England's friendly against Uruguay at Wembley this Friday, with the manager opting to explain his reasoning for omitting the talented full-back from his plans.

'As a response to being not nominated?' Tuchel asked when made aware of Alexander-Arnold's post. 'Well, fair enough, fair enough. I think it is a very hard decision that we took. No doubt about his talent, no doubt about his career and what he can give to teams.'

Tactical Reasoning Behind the Decision

The England manager elaborated on his tactical thinking, explaining: 'We created a slightly different game model when he was not in camp in September, October, November - it was a game model that was built on intensity and positivity, built even on the profile of the right full back on overlaps, underlaps, very intense. It was a slightly different profile of players in camp who performed so well. We just stick to these guys.'

Alexander-Arnold's situation at Real Madrid has stabilised somewhat since Xabi Alonso's departure and the January promotion of Alvaro Arbeloa from the club's third division reserve team, following a rocky beginning to his Spanish adventure. While reports suggest Arbeloa thinks highly of the English defender, he hasn't experienced a significant increase in playing time.

Alternative Options Preferred

Tuchel has instead preferred Tino Livramento and Djed Spence on the right side of defence, with Jarell Quansah also included in the original squad selection. When Quansah withdrew through injury, Ben White was recalled as his replacement, while Reece James remains unavailable due to injury concerns.

World Cup Hopes Remain Alive

Significantly, Tuchel refused to completely close the door on Alexander-Arnold earning a spot in his final squad for the upcoming World Cup in North America, even admitting he perhaps should have called up the defender on this occasion.

'He was with us in June, he should have maybe deserved a second chance,' Tuchel conceded. 'It is a very hard decision, I am aware of it. He took it on his chin, he will keep on going, I will make sure I see some matches from Real Madrid and maybe a Champions League match live to get my last impressions. He is on a long list and everyone is still in the mix but at the moment some other guys are just ahead.'

The England manager's comments suggest Alexander-Arnold remains under consideration for international duty despite his current exclusion, with Tuchel planning to monitor his performances closely at club level before making final World Cup selection decisions.
