The Miami Dolphins are preparing for the 2026-2027 NFL season without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has been released from the team. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan announced the decision on Monday, stating that the organisation would move forward without the star quarterback.
Tagovailoa signed a franchise-record $212.4 million contract extension less than two years ago. Shortly after the announcement, he shared an Instagram post thanking fans and expressing his regret. 'I also carry deep regret that I couldn’t get the job done and bring a championship home to this city,' he wrote.
Selected fifth overall in the 2020 draft, Tagovailoa struggled with consistency after multiple concussions. Despite missing at least one game in five of six seasons, he finished with a 44-32 record, completing 68% of passes for 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions.
His release comes as the NFL’s free agency period begins. Other notable releases include wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who was let go by the New England Patriots last week after a season in which he led the team to the Super Bowl.
