Kieran Trippier was seen confronting Anthony Gordon during Newcastle United's Champions League play-off first leg against Qarabag, despite the Magpies holding a 5-0 lead at half-time. Gordon scored four goals in the first half, including two penalties, but a disagreement erupted when Gordon insisted on taking the second spot-kick.
The tension continued as the players left the pitch at the interval. Manager Eddie Howe opted not to make any changes at half-time, and the pair returned for the second half without further incident. Malick Thiaw had opened the scoring early on, heading home a cross from Trippier.
Qarabag pulled one back through Elvin Cafarguliyev ten minutes into the second half, but substitute Jacob Murphy quickly restored Newcastle's five-goal cushion. Gordon was substituted in the 67th minute, replaced by William Osula.
Gordon's four-goal haul took his Champions League tally to ten for the season, second only to Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe on 13. Newcastle finished 11th in the league phase and are aiming to reach the group stage proper.
