Trent Alexander-Arnold's time at Real Madrid could be cut short, with reports indicating the England defender has been told he can leave the Bernabeu less than a year after rejecting Liverpool's contract offers to make the move.
The 27-year-old joined Real last summer in a £10m deal, but injury problems have limited him to just one assist in 11 appearances. His struggles have prompted former Spain international Alvaro Arbeloa, who arrived following Xabi Alonso's exit, to reportedly inform Alexander-Arnold he is free to depart.
The situation evokes Jurgen Klopp's warning to Philippe Coutinho when the Brazilian left Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018. Klopp advised Coutinho that a move to a European giant would make him 'just another player' rather than a legend at Anfield, where 'they will end up building a statue in your honour.' Coutinho's career at Barcelona duly declined before he returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa.
Alexander-Arnold, by contrast, had set his sights on becoming the first full-back to win the Ballon d'Or. Speaking in 2024, he said: 'I believe I can. I want to be the first full-back to ever do it.' That ambition now looks distant as he battles fitness issues and an uncertain future in Madrid.
While aspects of his struggles have been beyond his control, it was perhaps foreseeable that Real would lack the patience Liverpool might have shown. Klopp, who guided Alexander-Arnold to Champions League and Premier League glory at Anfield, may well have anticipated such a turn of events as history appears to repeat itself.
