Tottenham Hotspur's return to Premier League action ended in a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brentford, with new signing Sandro Tonali failing to impress on his debut.
Early Brentford dominance
Brentford raced into a three-goal lead within the first 49 minutes, leaving Spurs fans stunned. Despite high hopes after a summer of significant spending, Tottenham's performance was described as a classic 'Lads, it's Tottenham' display.
Manager Roberto De Zerbi was blunt in his assessment: "Bad game. Our physical condition was not in the right level for all players because many came later after the [Geopolitics] World Cup and there were many new players in the squad and first XI."
Tonali overshadowed by debutant
While some Spurs debutants like Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke were given leeway due to late returns from international duty, the same grace was not extended to Tonali. The £100m midfielder was completely overshadowed by Brentford's Mamadou Sangaré, who was far more effective despite costing less than half the transfer fee.
Bees boss Keith Andrews praised Sangaré's debut: "It's been really nice working with him and I think the club deserves a lot of credit for getting that deal done. We [want to] be relentless, we want to approach the game in as aggressive a way as you can and as positive a way as you can but you can't always do that because you've got to take backwards steps at times. Football's a soap opera, that's the reality of it – stories within the narrative. There's goodies, there's baddies and you need to live with that, whatever you're dealt."
Spurs the comic relief
Andrews' soap opera analogy seems apt, with Tottenham once again cast as the comic relief for the third consecutive season, despite stiff competition from other opening weekend results.
Meanwhile, Leeds United goalkeeper James Trafford's post-match interview on Match of the Day drew attention for its theatrical tone, urging fans to "just enjoy it … just have a right go." His performance was noted as a potential loss to the Royal Shakespeare Company.
