Tottenham retain Harry Kane matching clause after Bayern deal

Tottenham Hotspur's first-option matching rights on Harry Kane remain in place, even after the striker signed a new contract with Bayern Munich following his 2026 Ballon d'Or win.

Bayern announced on Thursday that Kane has committed to the club until the summer of 2029. Reports indicate he has become the highest-paid player in Europe by base salary.

The new deal follows Kane's 2026 Ballon d'Or triumph, where he beat Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal. He is now focused on winning more team honours with the Bundesliga club.

Kane on his Bayern future

"We signed the contract yesterday, but the decision was made quite a long time ago," Kane said. "As I've said before, I know I'm part of a great team, that we're competing for the Champions League and for every title."

"It's important for me to be somewhere where I can improve. There's no doubt about that here. My family is happy that we can stay here – overall, everyone's happy."

Spurs keep matching rights

Although Kane is settled in Germany, a future return to Tottenham has not been completely ruled out, even if there is no current indication it will happen.

Spurs confirmed that when Kane moved to Bayern in 2023, they negotiated a clause allowing them to match any bid for the striker. Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano had recently suggested Bayern were looking to remove the clause, which would have all but ended the prospect of a Premier League return.

Telegraph Sport has now reported that Tottenham retained their first-option matching rights for the England captain. If Bayern, who reportedly view Kane as "untouchable", agreed to sell him before his contract ends, Spurs would have to decide whether to match the bid and give the striker a choice.

The report also states there is no fixed fee attached to Tottenham's first-option matching rights.
