Sandro Tonali Addresses Eddie Howe Relationship and Arsenal Transfer Rumours
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has publicly addressed persistent rumours regarding his relationship with manager Eddie Howe, firmly dismissing claims of any fallout. The Italian international also responded to recent transfer speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal, reaffirming his commitment to the Magpies.
Transfer Window Speculation and Loyalty Pledge
Following the closure of the transfer window, Tonali broke his silence on swirling rumours that had connected him with a potential deadline day move to Arsenal. While both clubs maintained there was no substance to the claims, it emerged that an intermediary had presented Tonali to the North London outfit.
Tonali's representative clarified that he wasn't involved in any such discussions, though he acknowledged plans to review the player's future with Newcastle's hierarchy at the season's end. This statement did little to quell the speculation, prompting Tonali to directly address the situation.
FA Cup Performance and Celebration Significance
The midfielder's comments come after a standout performance in Newcastle's FA Cup victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, where he scored twice to secure his side's place in the fifth round. Tonali's enthusiastic celebrations with travelling fans and his subsequent embrace with Howe carried particular significance given the recent rumours.
"After the second goal, I came to Eddie because in the past few weeks, people spoke about our relationship," Tonali explained. "But I work every day with the gaffer, the gaffer works every day with me, and our relationship is perfect. It's not broken and I think this is perfect for the team."
Seasonal Form and Team Focus
Tonali admitted to experiencing a sluggish start to the campaign, with his performances over recent months failing to match the standards he set last season. However, his double against Villa represents what he hopes will be a turning point both personally and for the team.
"It's important for the team because it's the second win in a row away, and for me it's important because it's the first two goals in my season," he said. "I've started a little bit late, but every time when you score, your game and your day is different!"
The midfielder emphasized that team success remains his primary focus, stating: "I've tried to score for the last two months a little bit more - but the first most important thing always is the team."
Looking Ahead to European Competition
Newcastle now prepare for another challenging away fixture as they head to Azerbaijan to face Qarabag in European competition. Tonali expressed optimism that the recent victory can provide crucial momentum for the squad.
"Today was an amazing game; we played very well," he reflected. "This game is so important because we have one dream: to come back to Wembley."
The Italian also praised his teammates, particularly highlighting Nick Woltemade's contribution: "I'm happy especially for Nick. He played as a midfielder and he played very well and he scored the last goal. And I'm happy for every player, for every member of staff, for all the fans."
