Svitolina Defeats Gauff to Win Italian Open After Eight-Year Gap
Svitolina Beats Gauff to Claim Italian Open Title

Elina Svitolina showcased her trophy after a hard-fought victory at the Italian Open, defeating Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 in a grueling final. The Ukrainian's win marks her first significant title in eight years and her third Rome crown.

Svitolina's Resurgence

Svitolina, now 31, has evolved into a bolder player, no longer simply playing not to lose. This victory, her first WTA 1000-level title since 2018, caps a resurgent season where she has been one of the most consistent performers. She defeated the world No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 in consecutive matches, becoming the oldest player to beat three top-five opponents in a single WTA 1000 event since 1990.

"This is one of the toughest draws I've had," Svitolina said. "I'm very proud of how I handled myself and the nerves. Consistency is key, and I'm happy with my season."

Gauff's Frustration

Gauff, who converted only three of 17 break points, expressed disappointment at finishing runner-up for the second straight year. "It's a mental thing I have to learn from," she admitted.

The match was a gripping physical battle. Gauff led early but Svitolina applied relentless pressure, winning four consecutive games to take the first set. Gauff fought back in the second, forcing a tie-break with aggressive play, but Svitolina dominated the final set with fearless forehands.

Men's Final Preview

Jannik Sinner will face Casper Ruud in the men's final after Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in a rain-interrupted semi-final. Sinner, the world No. 1, seeks a record-extending sixth Masters 1000 title. Ruud advanced by dismantling Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1, seeking revenge for last year's loss to Sinner.

Svitolina now heads to Roland Garros as the No. 7 seed, but her WTA Race ranking at No. 3 reflects her elite form. She is clearly capable of winning the French Open.
