Sunderland demonstrated their resilience by holding Brighton & Hove Albion to a goalless draw at the Amex Stadium, despite missing four key players due to the Africa Cup of Nations. The result extended Brighton's winless run in the Premier League to four matches, while Sunderland moved closer to Champions League contention.
Brighton dominated possession but lacked cutting edge without injured top scorer Danny Welbeck. Their best chance came early when Mats Wieffer's header struck the crossbar. Sunderland's defence, marshalled by Dan Ballard, remained resolute throughout, with goalkeeper Robin Roefs making crucial saves to deny Yasin Ayari and others.
Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris praised his squad's depth after the match. 'The players who didn't play before will need time to step up, but they showed they are ready to go. We have to ride the wave,' he said. Le Bris brought in Lutsharel Geertruida, Chris Rigg, Trai Hume, and Simon Adingra to fill the void left by AFCON absentees.
Brighton's interim manager Fabian Hürzeler lamented his side's struggles in front of goal. 'We are in a phase where we are struggling to score at the moment, but the table is so close,' he said. Brighton have now failed to win a Premier League match in December since 2023, a run of nine games.
The result leaves Sunderland in contention for Champions League qualification with almost half the season gone, while Brighton's early-season promise has faded. Sunderland's travelling supporters, many wearing Santa hats with Le Bris's face, celebrated the point as a significant achievement.
