Raúl Jiménez scored a late winner as Fulham edged Sunderland 1-0 in a tense Premier League encounter at Craven Cottage. The Mexican striker’s 87th-minute strike, his first league goal of the season, came when it seemed Fulham were incapable of breaking down a stubborn Sunderland defence.
The victory lifted Fulham away from the relegation zone and eased pressure on manager Marco Silva, whose future has been uncertain amid reports of a contract impasse and dissatisfaction with the club’s lack of summer investment. Silva remained noncommittal after the match, stating: “I don’t need this type of performance to make important decisions.”
Sunderland, who started the day in fourth place, impressed with their organisation and counter-attacking threat. Enzo La Fée struck the post early in the second half, while goalkeeper Robin Roefs made several saves to keep Fulham at bay. However, the introduction of substitutes Emile Smith Rowe and Samuel Chukwueze proved decisive, with the latter’s cross setting up Jiménez’s winner.
The match was played in driving rain, and tensions boiled over at the final whistle as players and coaches clashed. Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris downplayed the incident, saying: “If there’s still energy in your tank it means before you didn’t push hard enough.” He reiterated his target of “around 40 points” for survival, rather than loftier ambitions.
Silva praised Jiménez’s work rate, noting the striker had returned from international duty with Mexico on Friday morning. “He always plays with his heart,” Silva said. “A proper striker’s goal in that situation.” The win provides a temporary calm for Fulham, but underlying issues regarding investment and Silva’s long-term commitment remain unresolved.
