Sunderland lost 2-0 to Dinamo Zagreb at the Stadium of Light on Thursday night in their Europa League group-stage match, played on Bonfire Night.

Dinamo Zagreb scored in the 22nd and 39th minutes of the game to secure the win.

Return to Europe

Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League last season after earning promotion back to the top tier. That position secured them a spot in European competition for the first time in 53 years.

The Black Cats have previously beaten AZ Alkmaar and Torreense and drew with Lech Poznan. They are yet to face Jagiellonia, AC Milan, Anderlecht and Levski Sofia.

The match took place at the Stadium of Light, with fireworks let off above the ground before kick-off.
