Steve Clarke described Scotland's 2-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Belarus as a 'head-scratcher' and admitted he was 'really disappointed' with the performance, despite it being a record-breaking night for him as manager.
Che Adams opened the scoring after 15 minutes at Hampden Park, but Scotland failed to build on the lead. Belarus had a goal disallowed for a foul on Scott McTominay before the Napoli midfielder scored in the 84th minute. A late strike from Hleb Kuchko set up a nervy finish, with some fans booing at full-time.
Clarke, who took charge for a record 72nd time, said: 'I'm really disappointed – really, really disappointed. It's possibly as disappointed as I've been over the whole 72 games. We just didn't turn up.' He added that the performance was 'way below par' but stressed that the three points were crucial.
The wins over Greece and Belarus leave Scotland on 10 points alongside Denmark, with a guaranteed top-two finish in the group. Clarke praised his players' character but insisted they must improve ahead of next month's final qualifiers against Greece and Denmark.
