Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Ben Davies has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until the end of next season. The 33-year-old Welshman's previous deal was set to expire at the end of June, but the new agreement will extend his stay in north London to 13 years.
Davies, who underwent surgery on a broken ankle in January, made only three Premier League appearances this season. Despite his limited game time, his leadership qualities were highly valued by manager Roberto De Zerbi, who took over in March and guided the club away from relegation. Davies was a vocal presence in the dressing room during the relegation battle, attending almost every team meeting and match despite his injury.
Speaking about De Zerbi's impact, Davies said: "He lifted us, he lifted the fans, he lifted the club. Having his presence, his confidence, and we can feel a lot of relief having got over the line we did. The job he did is amazing but I'm excited to see what he brings in the future." Davies also praised the supporters for their role in the club's survival, stating: "What they gave us towards the end of the season was incredible - a huge, huge lift."
Meanwhile, midfielder Yves Bissouma is set to leave Tottenham upon the expiry of his contract on June 30. Bissouma joined from Brighton in 2022 for £25 million and made 111 appearances in all competitions. His first-team opportunities were limited last season under Thomas Frank due to disciplinary issues, but he featured more prominently under De Zerbi during the successful relegation battle.
Also departing is Matthew Craig, who made his first-team debut against Leeds on the final day of the 2022-23 season and had loan spells at Doncaster, Barnsley and Mansfield Town.
