Tottenham Hotspur have exercised the one-year option on Son Heung-min's contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2026. The move prevents the South Korean forward from leaving as a free agent at the end of the current season or signing a pre-contract with a foreign club this month.
Son, now 32, joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for £22m and has made 431 appearances, scoring 169 goals. He is 11th on the club's all-time appearance list and fifth on the all-time scoring list, behind only Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith, and Martin Chivers.
Despite the extension, the longer-term future remains uncertain. Son will turn 34 in the summer of 2026, and negotiations over a further extension are expected to be complex. Chairman Daniel Levy, wary of losing Son for free, may consider offers for the player this summer if a new deal cannot be agreed.
Son was appointed club captain in the summer of 2023 and has become a global star, widely regarded as the most famous footballer in Asia.
