Solskjaer takes on FCK coaching role after missing United return
Solskjaer takes on FCK coaching role after United snub

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has taken on a coaching role with Norwegian club FCK, assisting both the youth setup and the first team, who compete in the country's fourth tier. The 53-year-old has been based in Kristiansund since being dismissed by Turkish club Besiktas in August 2025.

Solskjaer spent nearly three years in charge at Old Trafford before leaving in November 2021. He initially enjoyed success as caretaker boss after replacing Jose Mourinho, guiding the club to a Europa League final and a runners-up spot in the Premier League shortly before his exit.

Talks over Old Trafford Return

Since leaving United, Solskjaer's only senior position has been a brief spell at Besiktas last year. However, he held discussions about a potential return to Old Trafford before Michael Carrick's appointment in January. The current United manager is facing mounting scrutiny as the side are on a nine-game winless streak ahead of their Champions League clash with Roma on Tuesday.

Norwegian broadcaster TV2 reports that Solskjaer has been assisting FCK while waiting for his next managerial job. Several months after his Besiktas exit, Ruben Amorim's departure from United saw Solskjaer drawn into talks about a potential temporary return to the Old Trafford dugout. The club ultimately chose his former team-mate Carrick, who had also been part of Solskjaer's backroom staff.

Unfinished Business at United

Solskjaer admitted to feeling he has unfinished business at United. "None of us were desperate to get the job," he told TV2. "We'd probably be up for the job if they asked. At the time, there was talk of being an interim coach for the rest of the season."

"Going back to what has been is not always as good. Yes, I had lined up, but I didn't think it would last longer than the summer. It was probably time for someone else to try. I also feel like I have something unresolved. Of course it would have been nice to have the opportunity again."

Solskjaer remains in contact with Carrick and is confident his former colleague can steer the side out of their current poor run. "Michael has what it takes to take that club forward," Solskjaer said. "I think he's the right man. He understands the club, understands the fans and knows what's needed."

On a potential return to Old Trafford, Solskjaer added: "If Michael does well for ten years and decides to quit, and they ask me if I can take them for two months, of course I wouldn't say no."

Grassroots Coaching in Norway

Following his exit from United in 2021, Solskjaer spent time coaching a youth side in his native Norway. "I'm doing a lot of coaching, four times per week, and we have three teams," he previously told The Athletic. "I'm helping the kids, who enjoy it. You see a different side to football, the grassroots - except it's all plastic pitches here. You see the brightness in their eyes, they listen to you, they want to learn."
