Ole Gunnar Solskjær is set for face-to-face talks with Manchester United on Saturday regarding becoming the interim manager until the end of the season. The Norwegian is expected to meet Omar Berrada, United’s chief executive, and Jason Wilcox, the director of football, at the club’s Carrington training base.
Solskjær is vying with Michael Carrick for the role. Carrick is thought to have been interviewed on Thursday by Berrada and Wilcox. Darren Fletcher, the current caretaker manager, cannot be completely ruled out after impressing in United's 2-2 draw at Burnley on Wednesday. He will again take charge of Sunday's FA Cup tie against Brighton.
Solskjær previously served as United's interim manager from December 2018 to March 2019, an impressive tenure that earned him the job on a permanent basis. In his two full seasons, he led United to third and second place in the Premier League and guided the team to the 2021 Europa League final, where they lost on penalties to Villarreal.
Carrick was part of Solskjær's coaching staff and took over as interim manager for three games when Solskjær was sacked in November 2021, winning two and drawing one. If Solskjær is appointed, Carrick is open to working with him again as his number two. However, if Carrick gets the job, it is unclear whether he would offer Solskjær a role.
Fletcher, asked about his long-term future, said: 'I speak to Omar and Jason, that’s how the processes work. For me, I’ve been focusing on the job at hand, preparing the team for these two games. There’s been no thoughts or conversations about my future.'
