Arne Slot's Liverpool Gambles on Wirtz and Less Salah

Winning the Premier League has given Arne Slot the capital to overhaul Liverpool's tactics, shifting from a system built around Mohamed Salah to one that could feature Florian Wirtz more prominently. The Dutchman, who replaced Jürgen Klopp in 2024, made minimal changes last season, adding only Federico Chiesa, but has now embarked on a significant squad rebuild.

Slot's first season was marked by control and efficiency, with Liverpool winning eight matches 2-0 and preserving energy through measured performances. He coaxed a strong season from Salah and improved Ryan Gravenberch, but the team remained essentially Klopp's. This summer, however, Liverpool have brought in six senior players plus 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni, who is injured, signalling a major transition.

The death of Diogo Jota has accelerated the need for change, but the overhaul was planned regardless. While rivals like Arsenal have added depth without altering their style, Slot is making radical tactical shifts. The gamble is that a more Wirtz-centric approach can compensate for a reduced reliance on Salah, as Liverpool enter what is clearly a transitional season.
