Arne Slot Echoes Van Dijk's 'Slow and Predictable' Liverpool Critique After Wolves Defeat
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly agreed with defender Virgil van Dijk's blunt assessment that the team was 'slow, predictable and sloppy' during their shocking 2-1 Premier League defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday night. The loss at Molineux exposed persistent issues that have plagued Liverpool's away performances throughout the current campaign.
Wolves Snatch Late Victory as Liverpool Struggle
The match saw Rodrigo Gomes break the deadlock with Wolves' first shot in the 78th minute, only for Mohamed Salah to equalise with his first league goal since November. However, Andre's deflected strike deep into added time secured back-to-back league wins for Wolves under manager Rob Edwards, handing Liverpool a demoralising defeat.
Slot acknowledged Van Dijk's post-match comments to TNT Sports, stating: 'So 'slow' or 'predictable' are words that I can understand [Van Dijk] uses.' He noted some improvement in the second half, but admitted it was 'still not great', highlighting missed opportunities including a late Virgil van Dijk header that could have turned the game.
Recurring Themes of Slow Starts and Late Collapses
Liverpool's slow starts away from home have become a concerning pattern this season. Statistics reveal they have scored only three of their 22 away goals in the first half, consistently putting themselves under pressure from the outset.
More alarmingly, this defeat marked the fifth time this season that Liverpool have conceded a winning goal in stoppage time, setting an unwanted club record. Previous late losses came against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Bournemouth in January, and Manchester City last month.
Additionally, Liverpool conceded stoppage-time equalisers to Leeds United and Fulham earlier in the campaign. Combined, these late concessions have cost the Reds nine precious points after the 90-minute mark.
Slot's Frustration with Late Concessions
The Liverpool boss expressed particular frustration with the nature of the goals conceded, emphasising: 'Those are chances and the one we concede is not even a chance, and that is what has happened so many times to us this season.'
While acknowledging the timing might be coincidental given how frequently it has occurred, Slot pointed out the defensive solidity for much of the game, noting: 'We hardly gave away a chance today. We gave away one chance but conceded two.'
Quick Turnaround for FA Cup Revenge Mission
Liverpool face an immediate opportunity for redemption as they return to Molineux just 72 hours after their defeat for an FA Cup fixture on Friday night. Van Dijk stressed the need for rapid mental recovery, stating: 'Conceding goals is always frustrating. We've come on the back of a couple of clean sheets, defensively we've been very solid but it is what it is.'
The Dutch captain added: 'We have to move quickly on because we come back here in a couple of days and we want to do well in the FA Cup.' With fixtures coming thick and fast, Liverpool must address their systemic issues of slow starts and late defensive lapses to salvage their season across multiple competitions.
