Sky Sports presenter Mark Chapman has joked that Ruben Amorim is 'taking the mick' with his Manchester United tactics after the club's defensive line warmed up in a back three before lining up in a back four against Wolves.
Manchester United faced Wolves in the Premier League on Tuesday evening, looking to build on their win over Newcastle United. Prior to the match, United's defenders conducted drills as a back three, with Ayden Heaven, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw warming up in that formation. However, when the game began, United persisted with a back four, with Patrick Dorgu moving to the left wing and Joshua Zirkzee starting on the right.
Chapman, hosting Sky Sports' coverage with Jamie Carragher and Ashley Young, said: 'I think Ruben Amorim is taking the mick out of us a little bit because Manchester United have been warming up in a back three with Heaven on the right and Martinez in the middle and Luke Shaw on the left. Find out if it's three or a four on Sky Sports.'
Amorim had remained coy on his tactical plans before the match, stating: 'No, we just play with 11 players; the formation is not the important thing. The important thing is the spirit and our pace during the game, and then the formation can change during the game or for the game.' He also confirmed that Mason Mount missed the game due to a 'small' injury suffered in the first half of the win over Newcastle.
When out of possession, Dorgu dropped deeper to play as a left wing-back, forming a back five. Despite the tactical adjustments, Amorim's side nearly took the lead in the first 15 minutes when Benjamin Sesko came close to scoring his third goal for the club.
