Sky Sports has announced plans to cancel Soccer AM, the long-running Saturday morning football show, after 28 years on air. The final episode is proposed for 27 May, coinciding with the end of the current football season.
The programme, which first aired in 1995, became known for its light-hearted mix of football chat, celebrity interviews, and quirky games. Sky cited the 'evolving needs of our customers' as the reason for the decision, and confirmed a consultation period with staff.
A Sky spokesman stated: 'Soccer AM has played an important role in our coverage of football for the past three decades and we continually adapt to the evolving needs of our customers. We are unable to provide more detail while these consultations are under way.'
According to reports, staff were informed of the cancellation on Tuesday, with jobs likely to be made redundant in May. The show was previously hosted by Helen Chamberlain and Tim Lovejoy, and is currently fronted by John Fendley and former footballer Jimmy Bullard.
Pundit Chris Kamara, a regular on the show, shared fond memories following the news. The announcement marks the end of an era for a programme that became a staple of British football culture.
