Sky Sports has issued an apology after a series of errors during its live coverage of the opening weekend of the 2025/26 EFL season. The broadcaster's Soccer Saturday programme, which covered matches across League One and League Two, was marred by three significant mistakes in the first half of Plymouth Argyle's clash with Barnsley.
Presenter Julian Warren initially incorrectly reported that Plymouth had taken the lead through Caleb Watts, only to correct himself after the goal was ruled out for a foul. Moments later, Warren announced another Plymouth goal, but it transpired that Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu had scored an own goal to put Barnsley ahead. Warren said: "Goal for Plymouth, we have heard this before. Does this one count, Jamie Mackie?" Pundit Jamie Mackie replied: "It is a Plymouth player that scored... but it is at the wrong end."
Sky then made a third error when Adam Phillips doubled Barnsley's lead, but the broadcaster initially indicated the score remained 1-0. Warren joked: "I think the vidiprinter might still be on holiday, lying on a lounger with a couple of pina coladas."
In addition to the on-air mistakes, Sky faced criticism from fans for changes to its scoreboard graphic and for omitting stoppage time displays during Cardiff City's match against Peterborough United. One viewer described the new scoreboard as "horrid," while others questioned the lack of added time information.
Sky Sports has not commented further on the issues beyond the on-air apology.
