Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has delivered a stunning verdict on Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko, branding him "not good enough" for the club despite the Slovenian scoring twice in a dramatic 2-2 draw away to Burnley.
Sherwood's Scathing Half-Time Verdict
Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle on Wednesday 07 January 2026, Sherwood launched into a bizarre tirade against the £73m summer signing. He admitted Sesko's second-half brace was a positive but insisted his overall performance fell short of the required standard.
"The positive is Sesko scoring. Hopefully he gets some confidence. It’s taken him six months to turn up but I’m pleased for him," Sherwood stated. However, he then revealed: "I’d have had him off the pitch at half-time never to wear a Manchester United shirt again. I stand by what I said, he’s not good enough to play for Manchester United."
The ex-Aston Villa boss doubled down, suggesting the 22-year-old's goals came against weak opposition, adding: "He’s turned up for one game against Burnley who are going to get relegated. Hopefully we start seeing something different from him."
Sesko's Brace Lights Up Turf Moor
Sherwood's comments came after a match where Sesko transformed the game for United. After a quiet first half, the striker exploded into life after the break. His first goal was a smart, low finish from a Bruno Fernandes pass, but his second was a moment of pure class—a superb side-footed volley from Patrick Dorgu's cross that showcased his technical ability.
The two goals in ten minutes turned the tide for United, though Jaidon Anthony's late strike for Burnley ultimately secured a share of the points. The result was a missed opportunity for United to move into the Premier League's top four.
Fletcher's Faith and Future Fixtures
The match marked the first in temporary charge for former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who was full of praise for his centre-forward. Fletcher confirmed he had shown Sesko video analysis to boost his belief before the game.
"I was so happy for him," Fletcher explained. "We presented a video showing his movement and his goals, just showing how it is coming and he needs to keep believing... He did that tonight and scored two great goals on a real positive night for him."
Despite the personal milestone for Sesko, Fletcher labelled the overall result "a massive disappointment". He confirmed he will remain in the dugout for United's next match, an FA Cup tie away to Brighton this weekend. This is followed by a crucial home Manchester derby against City on 17th January.
The club's search for a temporary manager continues, with former bosses Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick reportedly under consideration for the interim role.
