Teddy Sheringham has suggested that Mikel Arteta could rejuvenate Trent Alexander-Arnold's career if Arsenal made a surprise move for the Real Madrid right-back. The former Manchester United striker believes the structured environment at the Emirates could help the 27-year-old overcome his defensive frailties.
Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool for Real Madrid last summer but endured a difficult first season in Spain, making only 14 La Liga starts due to injury and dressing room turmoil under sacked manager Xabi Alonso. He registered five assists across all competitions and was omitted from England's 2026 World Cup squad by Thomas Tuchel.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Sheringham said: 'Could we see Trent Alexander-Arnold back in the Premier League? Liverpool fans might not want him back so it does narrow down where he could go. He doesn't immediately strike me as an Arsenal player, but they could make it work for him.'
Sheringham added: 'If you put Trent in an organised, structured back four, and they work as a unit, that's what playing in a team like Arsenal is all about. If someone coached him to get in the right position at the right times, I'm sure he could improve to give Arsenal that extra dimension.'
The former England striker also criticised Tuchel's decision to leave Alexander-Arnold out of the World Cup squad, arguing that his unique attacking ability could unlock stubborn defences. 'No one else gives you what he can offer. It's something different,' Sheringham concluded.
