Alan Shearer has thanked Eddie Howe for his work at Newcastle United after news emerged of the manager's impending departure. Howe is expected to leave after five years in charge at St James' Park.
Howe's Departure and Pre-Season Defeat
The decision was reported on Thursday morning, following a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in Newcastle's second pre-season friendly. Howe informed his backroom staff after the squad returned from Bristol. His replacement is set to be Matthias Jaissle.
Carabao Cup Triumph
Howe leaves having won the Carabao Cup in the 2024/25 season, with Newcastle beating Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley to end a 70-year trophy drought. Shearer posted a photo of Howe holding the trophy with the message: "Thanks Eddie. You gave us this day."
Shearer's Surprise and Gratitude
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "I'm very, very surprised with the news that Eddie Howe is leaving Newcastle. I guess it's strange timing with three weeks to go until the new season kicks off." He added: "What I would say is thank you. Thank you to Eddie for what he's given us. He gave me my best day as a Newcastle fan with that day at Wembley."
Shearer also highlighted Howe's overall impact: "It's been an incredible ride. He did a wonderful job for Newcastle. He steadied the ship, got us climbing the league, brought in wonderful players, took us to a final and then gave us that day we've craved."
Player Sales and Uncertainty
Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer, while Alexander Isak left nearly 12 months ago. Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with Arsenal. Howe commented on Guimaraes: "What will be, will be. We can't control the forces that are at play here."
