Alan Shearer Slams Premier League VAR Standards as Manchester United Lodge Complaint
Alan Shearer has launched a scathing attack on the quality of Premier League officiating, describing it as "terrible" and the worst seen in years, as Manchester United prepare to formally complain to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The controversy stems from United's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on Friday night, where a key penalty decision has ignited fury within the club and drawn sharp criticism from the football legend.
Manchester United's Fury Over Bournemouth Draw
Manchester United will write to PGMOL chief Howard Webb to express their anger after feeling aggrieved by the officiating in their Premier League clash at Bournemouth. The club believes they were denied a clear penalty when Adrien Truffert challenged Amad in the box, with referee Stuart Attwell waving away the appeal. Bournemouth immediately capitalised, scoring through Ryan Christie to equalise at 1-1.
United had taken an early lead from the penalty spot after Alex Jimenez fouled Matheus Cunha, while Harry Maguire was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Evanilson. However, the Premier League match centre later stated that Truffert's tug on Amad was "not sufficient for a foul," a decision that left United captain Bruno Fernandes insisting VAR should have intervened to overturn Attwell's call.
Shearer's Blistering Critique of VAR
Alan Shearer, a long-time vocal critic of VAR, backed Manchester United's frustration, delivering a damning assessment on BBC Radio 5 Live. "I just think it’s been terrible and the standard of referees because of VAR are the worst we have seen for a long time and they are only getting worse," the Premier League legend said.
Shearer highlighted the inconsistency in decision-making, noting, "Last night was a poor decision from it. You should have given a penalty when you have already given two like that. How on earth do you not give another one?" He argued that officials have become overly reliant on technology, which is negatively impacting their performance. "They are too reliant on it and it’s affecting the standard of refereeing now, and it’s not a good look."
Broader Concerns Over VAR's Impact
The criticism extends beyond Shearer, with former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock adding his voice to the growing discontent. Warnock called VAR "the worst thing that has been introduced to the game," claiming it has ruined enjoyment in stadiums and undermined referees' ability to officiate effectively.
Warnock pointed to recent incidents, such as Brighton being denied a penalty against Arsenal, where the PGMOL admitted a mistake, as evidence that VAR remains flawed and subjective. "VAR isn’t perfect, it isn’t great, it makes mistakes and it’s still subjective which is a huge problem, and I just think it’s a poor addition to the game," he stated.
Implications for Premier League Officiating
This incident underscores ongoing tensions between clubs and match officials, with Manchester United's planned complaint reflecting a broader pattern of dissatisfaction with VAR's implementation. The technology, initially introduced to reduce errors, has instead sparked debates over consistency and clarity, as highlighted by Shearer's remarks on its deviation from the original "clear and obvious" standard.
As the Premier League season progresses, the pressure on the PGMOL to address these concerns is mounting, with calls for improved training and transparency in decision-making processes. The fallout from the Bournemouth match serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing modern football officiating.
