Alan Shearer has jokingly warned Liverpool fans not to get too excited about Florian Wirtz's first goal for the club, given it came against bottom-placed Wolves. The Germany international finally opened his account six months after a £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen, scoring in the 2-1 win at Anfield on Saturday.
Wirtz capitalised on Hugo Ekitike's build-up play to slot past Jose Sa just a minute after Ryan Gravenberch had broken the deadlock. The goal proved decisive as the Reds secured victory over a side yet to win this season.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Shearer said: 'Let's not get carried away, it was only Wolves at home.' He quickly clarified he was joking, after a Wolves fan had pleaded with the hosts not to discuss his club's struggles.
Shearer was impressed by Wirtz's understanding with Ekitike, adding: 'There is definitely a thing happening between him and Ekitike… I thought that was really good.'
Wirtz, 22, responded to calls for more goals by telling BBC Sport: 'I was confident that I would score one day. I wanted to start earlier but I have to accept it.' He also acknowledged the team's need to improve late-game performances.
