Alan Shearer has called on Newcastle United to sign both Ollie Watkins and Yoane Wissa after the club missed out on top target Benjamin Sesko. The Magpies had a bid accepted for the Slovenia striker, but he is expected to choose Manchester United instead.
Newcastle could also lose last season's top scorer Alexander Isak, who has attracted interest from Liverpool. Shearer believes Eddie Howe must act quickly to strengthen his attack. "If Newcastle were to get Yoane Wissa and Ollie Watkins, I think that would be two really good signings," Shearer told Betfair.
The former Newcastle captain acknowledged that deals would be difficult, with Aston Villa and Brentford reluctant to sell key players. Watkins scored in the opening minute when Villa last faced Newcastle, and the two sides meet on the opening weekend of the season.
Shearer also warned that Newcastle's relatively quiet summer could harm their chances of breaking into the top four. "When you look at the chasing pack, with the business done by Arsenal and Chelsea, it's going to be very difficult," he said.
Newcastle have already signed Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale this summer. Shearer added that even if Isak stays, the club still needs another centre-forward after losing Callum Wilson.
