Shaun White Faces Backlash Over 'Self-Centred' Olympics Commentary

Snowboarding icon Shaun White has come under intense criticism from viewers for what many have described as "narcissistic" commentary during NBC's broadcast of the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. The three-time Olympic gold medalist co-hosted the event alongside veteran sports commentator Mary Carillo and NBC Sports' Terry Gannon, but his repeated references to his personal experiences and career quickly drew ire from audiences.

Viewers Express Frustration on Social Media

Throughout the ceremony broadcast from Milan's San Siro Stadium, White frequently mentioned his own travels and past Olympic experiences. "I was so thrilled to hear that Italy was taking on this Olympics, just because I had such an incredible time [in 2006] and I knew this would deliver on that magnitude. To be back here 20 years later is just incredible," he remarked during the broadcast.

On social media platforms, viewers were quick to voice their displeasure. On the Olympics subreddit, a post titled "OK, we get it, Shaun White has been to every one of these countries" garnered hundreds of upvotes and comments. One user sarcastically asked, "What, are you saying you didn't tune in to listen to all of Shaun White's Best Memories?" while another bluntly stated, "It's all about Shaun."

A particularly critical comment read: "Pretty incredible what a narcissist he is. Instead of talking about and celebrating all the countries and athletes competing, he's making it about himself. Over and over and over."

X Users Join the Criticism

On X, formerly known as Twitter, similar sentiments emerged. One viewer questioned, "Why is the Olympics opening ceremony just Shaun White talking about his world travels?" Another opined, "Can someone please tell Shaun White to stop talking! We don't need to hear about your glory days or that you've been to a lot of countries or that you've never been to India but love Indian food. Great athlete not a great commentator."

A third user joked, "Is Shaun White just using the opening ceremony to flex how cool his life is whenever a new country shows up?" The Independent has reached out to White's representatives for comment regarding the widespread criticism.

Ceremony Highlights and Additional Controversy

The opening ceremony itself featured performances by global music icons Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli, alongside appearances from actress Sabrina Impacciatore of The White Lotus fame and renowned pianist Lang Lang. Rapper Snoop Dogg, stationed in Cortina, conducted interviews with Team USA flag bearer Frank Del Duca and members of the Jamaican bobsledding team.

However, White wasn't the only American facing scrutiny during the event. Mariah Carey's performance also came under fire, with viewers accusing the Grammy-winning artist of lip-syncing. Wearing a wintery silver-and-white dress, Carey performed a rendition of Domenico Modugno's classic "Nel blu, dipinto di blu" (better known as "Volare") before transitioning into her song "Nothing Is Impossible" from her 2025 album Here For It All.

On social media, fans questioned why an American singer was featured so prominently at an Italian-hosted event. One person asked on X, "Is Mariah Carey part Italian? I'm not sure why an American singer is there, unless, maybe she's super popular in Italy?" Another pointed out, "Usually the host country only features talent from their country. Great Britain had Bowie, Annie Lennox, & others... don't recall any American singers."

Olympics Theme and Schedule

The theme of this year's opening ceremony was "Harmony," representing the two Italian cities hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics: Milan and the mountain town of Cortina d'Ampezzo. The Winter Olympics will continue until the closing ceremony on February 22, featuring 116 medal events across 19 days of competition in Italy.
