Scotland Rugby Great Scott Hastings Dies at 61

Scotland and British and Irish Lions rugby legend Scott Hastings has passed away at the age of 61. The former centre, who earned 65 caps for Scotland over an illustrious 11-year Test career starting in 1986, died due to complications arising from cancer treatment, his family confirmed.

Family Announcement

A statement released by his children, Corey and Kerry-Anne, revealed that Hastings died peacefully surrounded by family on the morning of Sunday, May 17. The date also marked what would have been his late wife Jenny's birthday. "Scott was undergoing cancer treatment and due to complications deteriorated extremely quickly," the statement read. "Despite every effort by the incredible team at the Western General ICU, he passed away peacefully and pain free."

Hastings had announced in 2022 that he had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The family requested privacy during this difficult time, adding that more information would be shared later to celebrate his remarkable life.

Rugby Career

Hastings, the younger brother of former Scotland captain Gavin Hastings, was a key figure in the most recent Scotland team to win the Five Nations Grand Slam in 1990. He was selected for the British and Irish Lions tours in 1989 and 1993, making two Test appearances against Australia. His international debut came against France in 1986, and he retired from playing after facing England in 1997.

After hanging up his boots, Hastings transitioned into broadcasting, becoming a well-respected commentator and analyst.

Tributes from Legends

Former Scotland and Lions head coach Sir Ian McGeechan paid heartfelt tribute. "My association with Scott and his brother Gavin was always special for me," McGeechan said. "We came into the Scotland set-up, myself as coach, and Scott and Gavin as players, at the same time. We came in together and we grew together."

McGeechan recalled Hastings' fierce determination on the Lions tours. "He was so single-minded and determined about winning. He was very much your right-hand man, given what he did on the field. I still remember the Grand Slam game against England in 1990. There was his Lions team-mate from the previous year, Jerry Guscott, in the England team, but Scott gave nothing away to him whatsoever. Whatever jersey Scott wore, he just made it better."

Scotland's First Minister John Swinney also expressed his sorrow. "I am terribly saddened to hear about the death of Scott Hastings and extend my deepest sympathies to his family. Scott will rightly be remembered as one of the greats of Scottish rugby. He was a true sportsman, a force of nature and an example to all. I know that Scott will be sorely missed by all who knew him and by those who admired him."
