Scotland player ratings after Slovenia defeat at Hampden
Scotland ratings: Slovenia loss at Hampden

Scotland fell to a 2-1 Nations League defeat against Slovenia at Hampden, with Ryan Christie's close-range opener cancelled out by second-half goals from Aljosa Matko and Daniel Sturm. The result leaves Sebastien Pocognoli still searching for a first home win as head coach.

Match summary

Christie poked home from close range to put Scotland ahead, but the home side faded in the second period as Slovenia capitalised on the counter attack. Andy Robertson was presented with a special shirt by former bosses Gordon Strachan, Alex McLeish and Steve Clarke to mark his 100th cap, earned in the weekend win in North Macedonia.

Substitutes Findlay Curtis and Josh McPake had late penalty appeals dismissed by referee Jose Maria Sanchez on a frustrating night. The Tartan Army voiced their displeasure at the final whistle, and Pocognoli will have to wait until next month's meeting with North Macedonia for another chance to break his Hampden duck.

Player ratings

Angus Gunn – 5: A slight nick took the Slovenia goal out of his reach but it was not the most comfortable of evenings for the keeper with some awkward moments.

Stephen Welsh – 5: Comfortable on the ball but was left exposed a few times with Gannon-Doak so high up the pitch. Made a few important interventions but hooked.

Jack Hendry – 5: Managed to make brilliant blocks early in both halves but had some ropy moments too with Vipotnik constantly dragging him out of position.

Luis Binks – 5: Left one-on-one for the Slovenian goal and came off second best and had some difficult times when visitors counter attacked.

John McGinn – 5: Tried to keep possession and get the side going forward but looked like he was running on fumes in the second half as visitors ran through.

Lewis Ferguson – 5: Superb tackle early on and quick thinking pass to Gannon-Doak led to the first goal. But another one who ran out of steam as game wore on.

Billy Gilmour – 5: Had to deal with a couple of big bouncers on his case for long spells which meant only occasional slipped his markers to zip some decent balls.

Andy Robertson – 5: Captain enjoyed a special moment with the pre-match presentation and there was another with an incredible block to deny visitors a leveller but was a tough night by the end.

Ben Gannon-Doak – 6: The main threat at times and produced a lovely dinked cross to set up the opener but often exposed defensively in wing back role.

Ryan Christie – 5: Neat finish to poke home the opener but found it difficult to find space just off the front and gave ball away for leveller.

Oli McBurnie – 5: Should perhaps have nodded in himself but at least teed up Christie to notch, and the big man worked hard without much decent service.
