Scholes: Fernandes must leave European football

Paul Scholes believes Bruno Fernandes can no longer be trusted by any manager and should leave European football after the Manchester United captain criticised head coach Michael Carrick.

The reaction from the former United midfielder follows Fernandes' comments after the team's 4-1 defeat to Como in Italy last week, when the 32-year-old voiced frustrations with the tactics United were given.

Fernandes criticises tactics after Como defeat

Speaking to TNT Sports, Fernandes said: "It's a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a bit of space in behind and then try to get the ball in the first moment to wait for them, to give them the ball.

"But sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams, they get confident, they have so many bodies behind the ball that make you run a lot which makes people get frustrated.

"And then, when we recover the ball, the legs and the brain are much more difficult to make it work."

On whether Carrick got things wrong tactically, Fernandes said: "That's on the manager and staff to see it, not me."

Dropped to the bench for Bournemouth defeat

The midfielder was then dropped to the bench for the Premier League meeting with Bournemouth on Sunday and was not brought on despite United sliding to a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

Scholes thinks that not only should Fernandes' Manchester United career be over as a result of what he said, but also his future in European football.

"What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that's unforgivable," Scholes said on The Good, The Bad and The Football. "How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now?

"I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way.

"I don't think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that."

Butt: Interview ruined Fernandes' legacy

Another former Manchester United midfielder, Nicky Butt, feels that one misjudged interview has ruined a fantastic legacy for Fernandes at Manchester United.

"We sing his praises for his abilities he's been the only player for the last 12, 13 years that's gone: 'I know what it means to play for this football club and I'm good enough to play football and I'm going to carry it on my shoulders and I'm going to lead it. I'm going to score goals. I'm going to create. I'm not leaving. I'm staying. I'm fighting the fight.' And he's killed himself in one interview. Stupid."

The futures of both Fernandes and Carrick remain uncertain, with the manager in serious danger of losing his job after the heavy defeat to the Cherries made it eight games without a win. Manchester United travel to Chelsea on Saturday and whether Carrick will be in charge or Fernandes will be picked is yet to be seen.
