Scholes: Fernandes 'finished' as Carrick weighs recall

Paul Scholes has said Bruno Fernandes' Manchester United career is over and has urged the Portugal international to leave European football for the Saudi Pro League, while Michael Carrick is reportedly prepared to bring the midfielder back into the starting line-up for this weekend's meeting with Chelsea.

Fernandes was dropped to the bench for Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth after publicly criticising Carrick's tactics following the 4-1 loss to Como four days earlier. The results are part of an eight-match winless run that has left United just a point above the relegation zone and Carrick's position under mounting pressure.

Scholes: Fernandes outburst 'unforgivable'

The 51-year-old Scholes branded the midfielder's comments "unforgivable" and said staff at United would never be able to trust him again.

"What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that's unforgivable," Scholes said. "How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now?"

"I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way. I don't think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that."

Carrick set to recall Fernandes

Before the Bournemouth defeat, Fernandes had played every minute of United's Premier League campaign, making his omission notable amid the club's crisis.

According to The Athletic, Carrick, Fernandes and senior staff members have agreed to draw a line under the rift, potentially paving the way for the midfielder to start at Stamford Bridge.

The internal truce follows Carrick's narrow escape from the sack. On Monday, co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram Glazer and Joel Glazer held a high-level conference call with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to discuss the manager's future. Carrick was granted a stay of execution on Tuesday, but anything short of a convincing performance against Chelsea could prove fatal to his tenure.
