Peter Schmeichel has criticised Manchester United's decision to replace Rasmus Hojlund with Benjamin Sesko, describing the move as 'weird' and echoing earlier comments from Paul Scholes. The legendary goalkeeper questioned the logic behind the swap, especially given Hojlund's strong form on loan at Napoli.
United endured a historically poor season and invested heavily in the summer, signing Matheus Cunha for £62.5m and Bryan Mbeumo for £71m. However, they also allowed Hojlund to join Napoli on loan after his disappointing campaign, while spending a similar fee on RB Leipzig striker Sesko.
Schmeichel told the BBC's Sacked In The Morning podcast: 'We had Hojlund, starved of service for two years. You only need to see what he is doing now at Napoli... with Kevin De Bruyne and Scott McTominay to play with.' The Dane reiterated his belief that Hojlund could be a 25-goal-a-season striker if given proper service, adding that United already had players capable of providing that in Cunha and Mbeumo.
While Sesko has shown glimpses of potential with two goals in his last two appearances, Schmeichel believes the money could have been better spent on a defensive midfielder. He also expressed concerns over United's goalkeeping, noting that errors have cost nine goals this season, far from the standard set by himself or Edwin van der Sar.
Schmeichel lamented the lack of a single authority in recruitment, saying: 'When I played, the manager was in charge. He said: “Him in, him out.” Now it is different people with different agendas.' When asked about a potential behind-the-scenes role at United, he replied: 'I would love that. I would absolutely love that.'
