Bayer Leverkusen climbed to fourth in the Bundesliga standings after a thrilling 4-2 victory over Hoffenheim, courtesy of a Patrik Schick hat-trick. The win not only boosted Leverkusen's European qualification hopes but also dealt a significant setback to Hoffenheim's ambitions for continental football next season.
The match at the BayArena started with high intensity, as both teams sought to assert dominance early on. Hoffenheim drew first blood in the 12th minute when Andrej Kramaric slotted home a penalty after a handball in the box. However, Leverkusen responded swiftly, with Schick equalizing in the 24th minute with a clinical finish from inside the area.
The home side took the lead just before halftime through a well-worked set piece. Florian Wirtz delivered a precise corner that found the head of Jonathan Tah, who powered the ball past the goalkeeper. Leverkusen extended their advantage early in the second half when Schick completed his hat-trick, first with a composed finish after a defensive error and then with a stunning long-range strike that left the Hoffenheim keeper with no chance.
Hoffenheim refused to go down without a fight and pulled one back in the 68th minute through Ihlas Bebou, who capitalized on a defensive mix-up. However, Leverkusen held firm to secure the three points, with Schick's heroics earning him the man of the match award.
The result moves Leverkusen into fourth place, leapfrogging their opponents, who drop to sixth. With five games remaining, the race for European spots remains intensely competitive. Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso praised his team's resilience and attacking prowess, while Hoffenheim coach Pellegrino Matarazzo lamented defensive lapses.
Schick's hat-trick was his second of the season, taking his tally to 18 goals in the campaign. The Czech international has been in scintillating form, and his performance will be crucial as Leverkusen aim to secure Champions League football for next season.
