Scheffler Falls to Hovland in Sudden-Death Playoff
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was defeated by Viktor Hovland in a sudden-death playoff at the Travelers Championship on Monday, with the Norwegian claiming victory after a weather-delayed finish. Both players were tied at 21-under par after the final round on Sunday at TPC River Highlands, forcing a Monday morning playoff. On the 18th hole, both competitors found the fairway and hit precise approach shots, but Scheffler missed a four-foot putt while Hovland converted from seven feet to secure the title.
Prize Money Impact
The signature tournament featured a £15 million prize fund, with Hovland taking home £2.7 million as champion. Scheffler earned £1.6 million for second place. While Scheffler still leads the PGA Tour earnings table, his advantage over Matt Fitzpatrick in second place is just £1.36 million, leaving him vulnerable to being overtaken in the coming weeks. Scheffler plans to skip the non-signature John Deere Classic and will next compete at the Scottish Open.
Reflecting on the loss, Scheffler said: "I've been playing golf with Viktor for a long time. He's a guy that has a lot of talent and works really hard. Those are the types of guys you like to see have success." He added: "It's been two really, really long weeks. Being in contention both weeks. Any time after a major championship, especially a US Open, I think you're going to be pretty worn out. But I felt like I did some really nice things this week, which I'll use that momentum going into the rest of the season."
Dustin Johnson Withdraws from The Open
The Open will proceed without former Masters champion Dustin Johnson, who has declined to enter Final Qualifying. Johnson had competed in the previous 16 editions of the major championship, making his debut in 2009. However, having dropped to world No. 210, he no longer gains automatic entry. He would have needed to secure his place through Final Qualifying, a demanding 36-hole contest across UK links venues, but his name has been withdrawn from the field list. As a result, fans will not see Johnson at Royal Birkdale for this year's Open.
