Scottie Scheffler has come under fire after unleashing a tirade at his caddie, Ted Scott, during the first round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The world No. 1 found himself six shots off the lead after a one-over-par round, but his frustrations boiled over on the 16th hole when his ball ended up in the water hazard.
Scheffler, who had initially found the green, watched his ball bounce into the water and immediately directed his anger at Scott. “I never thought that I was in the water. I don’t know what to do. I can’t hear a word you’re saying,” he exclaimed. He continued, “Absolutely flushed a 7-iron and we get the wind wrong, and I end up in the water. I don’t think you understand how frustrating that is.”
Scott remained calm throughout the outburst, even remarking, “I liked that shot.” However, Scheffler’s rant continued at the drop zone, where he said, “I don’t understand what I’m meant to do. I don’t understand. I really don’t. I mean, it was five yards short of the green, flushed 7-iron, because it’s into off the right. Like there’s no way it could curve that much.”
The incident drew criticism from fans and observers. One fan commented, “I don’t get unloading on a caddy. You’re top twenty in the world and you can’t read the wind?” Another said, “Hopefully Scottie should apologise to Ted for his rant, when the error was his!” A third added, “Dude you hit the shot. Own it. Becoming a bit of a cry baby lately.”
This is not the first time Scheffler has shown frustration on the course. Last month at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, he smashed his driver on the tee box. The latest outburst has led to calls for an apology, with some suggesting Scott should have walked off the course.
